Located 28km north of Guangzhou, the New Baiyun international Airport was put into use on June 28, 2004, which made the airport the third largest in China next to Beijing and Shanghai. Now the first phase has been achieved in 2005. The whole project will be finished in 2020.
This landmark airport, costing RMB19.6 billion (US$2.3 billion), is said to be one of the most advanced and largest airport in the nation. With an area of 15 square kilometers, the new airport's size would be five times the size of the old one. It was the first airport in the country to build the Metro to connect the city with airport.
The new airport, designed by Parsons Corp. and URS Greiner Corp., both of the United States, and the Guangdong Provincial Architectural Design Institute, can accommodate the world's largest planes, such as Boeing 747s.
The present passenger flow is 16 million and the cargo flow 590,000 tons. By 2010, the airport are expected to see a passenger flow of 25 million and a cargo flow of 1 million tons a year. By 2030, it could see a passenger flow of 80 million and a cargo flow of 2.5 million tons a year. |
