372km northwest of Kunming, Dali lies on the western edge of Erhai Lake at an altitude of 1900 meters, with the imposing Cangshan Mountain range (average 4000 meters) behind it.
The charming town of Dali is traditionally one of the best places in China to tune out for a while. Today's Dali is the capital of the Bai Autonomous Prefecture. In history, the local Bai people established their own kingdom for centuries. Now we can still see its old city wall and the cobble stone streets in town. Dali is sunny year-round, though winter nights can be chilly. The best times to visit are between February and October, when the majority of festivals take place.
